WUJS Congress 2012

he World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS) kicked off its annual Congress with an exciting gala dinner Sunday night. The event, spanning a total of 5 days, will be taking place at the Bayit Vegan Guest House in Jerusalem. Delegates from numerous countries all around the world have journeyed to Jerusalem to take part in the week’s activities and opportunities. A new chairman will also be elected to lead the union for the coming year.

The delegates will get the chance to hear from a variety of speakers, including Vice Prime Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Egyptian political activist and blogger Mikail Nabil, lead Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat, among others. The conference will include a variety of guest panels, forums and focus groups on different issues affecting Jewish students and the world around them. Students will be able to obtain useful information and tools to help battle Anti Semitism around the globe, as well as promote Zionism in their home towns and Universities. A wide array of topics will be discussed, such as women in Israeli and Jewish society, Hasbara, and Jewish refugees from Arab countries.

Current WUJS chairman, Oliver Worth, said “We are excited to have the leaders of Jewish student organizations from every corner of the world here in Jerusalem for what promises to be an inspiring and exciting week.” Oliver added that he trusts the elected chairmen will do an outstanding job in leading the union, given the excellent choice of candidates.

The Presidential candidates who are running for President include Chaya Esther Pomeranz and Liron Politzner. Pomeranz, 23, is a graduate of Bar Ilan University. She was born in Los Angeles, California but has lived in Israel for the last 20 years. She is currently the Comptroller of WUJS since December 2012, the founder and President of the Israeli Model UN Association, as well as the Founder of the Bar Ilan University’s Model UN Society and Co-Founder of “For Her Future,” an international Women Empowerment Organization, among other things. Liron Politzer, 28, is also a graduate of Bar Ilan University from Ramat Gan. He has been in WUJS since 2010 and is supported by the National Union of Israeli Students (NUIS). He is currently the head of Bar Ilan Student Union and is number five in the Knesset list in the Green Party.
