The 15th plenary meeting of the World Jewish Congress will take place April 23-25, 2017 in New York City. The gathering of Jewish community leaders from all over the world takes place every 4 years and sees the election of the WJC Executive.
There are many different roles on the WJC Executive, however, currently only three of those seats are reserved for “young adults”. One would normally assume that “young adult” seats would be reserved for youth, however the current definition of young adults that the WJC uses is under the age of 40. We, as the only global, democratically-elected organisation representing all Jewish students feel strongly that these three seats should be held by actual young people.
Out of a total of nine candidates running in this election, only three are under the age of 30. All three are experienced, Jewish student activists who have been elected already to lead their organisations on the national, continental and global levels. Today’s active Jewish youth are the future leaders of the Jewish community so it is especially important for our voices to be heard in arenas such as the World Jewish Congress.
Therefore, in the elections for “Executive Members Representing Young Adults” we intend to cast our votes for the #Activists4WJC slate made up of:
This plenary will also see the election of three “Vice-Presidents representing International Organisations”. We have put ourselves forward to be one of those three organisations to make sure that there is a guaranteed voice for Jewish students on the WJC Executive for the next 4 years.
President John F Kennedy once said that “the Jewish people - ever since David slew Goliath - have never considered youth as a barrier to leadership, or measured experience and maturity by mere length of days.” Those words ring as true today as they ever did and we at the World Union of Jewish Students will not let delegates to the WJC Plenary forget them.
