The World Zionist Organization (WZO) invited WUJS staff to a Hebrew-language training session on Har Herzl last week. The WZO has been working on a new taste-of-Hebrew program called ‘Tachles’ that has seen great success in Synagogues and WZO centers across North America and is now looking to expand to Campuses and Summer Camps.
Hebrew has always brought Jewish people together, and is an important component of Jewish identity and culture. One of the main objectives of the WZO is to promote the Hebrew language amongst diaspora communities, whilst strengthening Jewish identity, sense of Zionism and connection to the state of Israel. This is where the idea for ‘Tachles’ was born.
Taking into consideration the busy and dynamic modern way of life, the WZO created a straightforward, quick and fun Hebrew makeover. Offered in a relaxed and informal atmosphere and designed mainly for students and young professional ‘Tachles’ is a great area of cooperation for the WZO and WUJS in the coming months and years.
‘Tachles’ offers classes on the following subjects: How to introduce yourself, getting directions, small talk, how to order in a restaurant, shopping and more. ‘Tachles’ is not a traditional Ulpan setting, with a focus on grammar rules, reading and writing.
WUJS looks forward to helping the WZO expand this program and asks any unions interested in bringing ‘Tachles’ to their students to be in contact with Andi directly.
