This year was the first year that Chile joined Israel Apartheid Week (IAW) campaign and organised events on universities around the country to single out Israel and portray it as a pariah Apartheid state. Events were organised in Santiago in several universities, played the movie ‘Omar’ and organised a musical event inviting emerging Palestinian bands.
Being inspired by the #Rethink2014 campaign of British students the Chilean Union of Jewish Student (FEJ) have decided to act and organize an online social media campaign. FEJ wants to educate students and shape the public opinion so that IAW doesn’t become any stronger or louder in Chile.
Similarly to British students, activists of the Union shared their views about why they oppose Israel Apartheid Week and these images traveled across social media reaching to university students around the country. Students participated not only from the capital but from Conception (city in the South of Chile) and Uruguay as well.
The goal of the campaign was to bring a different narrative to universities than the hateful messages of the IAW. The organisers of the campaign are hoping that IAW will not gain legitimacy in Chile and that universities will remain welcoming atmospheres for every student.
Ariel Bohorodzaner, President of FEJ said: “We’re very happy with the result of the campaign. I think it shows, on one hand, how we can take a hateful message and turn it into a positive one; and, on the other hand, the importance of the synergy and coordination that comes from WUJS instances.”
