Ariela Carno, Chairperson of the South African Union of Jewish Students (SAUJS) visited the HQ of the French Union of Jewish Students (UEJF) in Paris and gave a presentation about South Africa’s Apartheid history and the analogy of Israel being an Apartheid state.
WUJS always encourages exchange and sharing of best practices between student unions and we are hoping that more unions will have the chance to learn from each other in the future.
This year I had the honour of joining Jewish students and UJS in Liverpool at the annual conference of the Nation student movement.
To begin with let me explain by stating that I had no expectations for this conference as a movement on this scale does not happen anywhere in the world and certainly not in Austria where I studied. The conference brought together an extremely diverse range of groups of people and that’s not to mention the range of interesting accents I heard at conference!
Hungary to build monument that paints a false picture of WWII – despite Jewish community’s rejection
In the past weeks much has been said about a new government-planned World War Two (WWII) monument in Budapest’s Freedom square. The monument sparked fierce debate both in Hungary and the rest of the world; its critics say that it depicts Hungary as an angel being attacked by a Nazi-German eagle – absolving Hungarians of their active role after and during the Nazi occupation in sending approximately 450,000 innocent Hungarian Jews to their deaths.
