The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress held its General Assembly in Jerusalem yesterday and elected the British-Austrian businessman Julius Meinl, as the organization’s new president. WUJS was represented by its Chairperson Andi Gergely and Executive Member Victoria Godik who met with Mr Julius Meinl and Jewish students from the region.
Andi and Victoria met with Mr Julius Meinl and wished him a successful mandate as President of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. In his opening speech to the Congress Mr Meinl spoke about young Jews and their connection to their Jewish identity. “Many young Jews have almost no connection to their own identity having grown up in homes where no-one mentioned their Jewish lineage, their Jewish heritage. The disturbing irony of the past 70 years is that being a Jew remained something to hide, like we were the ones who ought to be ashamed of what had happened,” Meinl said.
Andi also met with the students delegation from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia and spoke to them about the different programs and campaign of WUJS, and the possibilities to be involved with international programs. Andi heard from the representatives of student bodies about their local programs and initiatives and some of the challenges they are facing in their country. WUJS is determined to strengthen its ties with student unions in the Former Soviet Union and in Asia and to involve these youth in the international student community. WUJS will be focusing its efforts to work in close connection with these communities and with its student bodies.
